Character Profile - Ben

From creating my character in a way I used the character Alex to influence some of his characteristics.

Love,Rosie - character: Alex
Age: continuous
Interests: medicine
Hobbies: unclear
Personality: caring, sentimental, loyal, loving, selfless

My character
Name: Ben Stanton
Age: continuous
Interests: Photography, Art-History
Hobbies: Bowling, puzzles and Pottery, Rugby
Personality: Loud, easily exited, sentimental, Closed emotionally, Selfless

To try and really get to know my character i've written a short paragraph about him from his Mother's point of view.

Ben is a lovely boy, wouldn't hurt a fly. He has always been there for Sophie, they really are the best of friends. He isn't always open about his emotions probably because he's so selfless, if he sees his emotions getting in the way of someone else's happiness he'll keep it to himself.

First draft of storyboard

So this is my first draft of my storyboard, I know there aren't any pictures but my drawing skills are awful and it was easier for me to visualise with words at first.

This is an extremely rough draft I think its clear that I still have a lot of things that I haven't figured out yet but as i start to put things together and work them out i will make more drafts and end up with my final storyboard shortly.

Titles and credits timeline for Love, Rosie

Because Love, Rosie has such a similar storyline to mine it only seemed logical to look at the credit and titles for its trailer and how it's all set out and then I can take that on board for when I go to make my own trailer.

Character Profile - Sophie

Name: Sophie Del
Age: Continuous
Interests: TV History and Drama
Hobbies: Reading, Dancing
Personality: Bubbly, Loud, Hyperactive, Kind

Film Pitch:

Throughout their whole lives Sophie and Ben have been best friends, living in the same close knit village, at the same school, same friends, same everything. They both love each other in more than just a platonic way but are both too nervous to say anything. They go through their lives dating other people; falling out with one another; fighting and rekindling their friendship. Sophie becomes highly successful, however, due to unforeseen circumstances Ben's life goes in a slightly different direction.

Inspirational film. - Love Rosie

Love Rosie

For weeks now people have been telling me to watch this film so I finally decided too and I'm ever so thankful that I did, because it is so close to the sort of film that I want to make. It follows a teenager called Rosie and her best friend Alex through their lives and the aspect of their love being ever so slightly forbidden as they are best friends, and so they do not want to make an advance in case it messes up what they have.(Spoiler alert) You can argue that it is kind of a social realism film, not by the way it's filmed but by one of the focus' in the film that she becomes a teenage mother and how her life plan is changed due to the child.

Further research into logos and initial ideas.

This is a short Canva presentation looking at some pre-existing production company logos that caught my eye and brief explanations as to why I like them. I've then chosen some images that I think I'd like to incorporate when making my own image.

Bellow is a few sketches that I drew up when I was thinking about other possibilities for my logo.

My Genre

For my film I will be incorporating two genres together to make a sub-genre.

  • Social realism
  • Romance

My reasons behind choosing to join these two together is that although romance isn't a problem that people face in society as a whole, It can be something that massively effects a person and their whole life in a negative way and I feel that due to all of the 'chick-flicks' out there, there is an unfair representation of what love is and by filming in the same sort of way as a social realism film it will allow the audience to
1) relate with the characters
 2) accept that every love story is a fairy-tale.

Production company research:

A brief Canva presentation on two contrasting production companies. The reason I have looked into these two specifically is I haven't looked into them that much previously and I was curious as to the sort of films they produced etc. By looking at production companies I'll be able to give myself a rough idea about how they work but also how mine would work when it comes to setting guidelines and rules about films.

What I found really interesting about them is that their logos in a way can tell you all you need to know about the types of films they produce. BadRobot for example, it's logo is dark and looks a little spooky which is back up by the name of the company (the 'Bad' bit) The word bad can imply to the viewer that the films, maybe aren't for the faint hearted. All you have to do to see this is look at the film list I have posted bellow of some of the films they have been producing recently.

Audiance Profie

MY TARGET AUDIENCE:
from doing research I have decided that my ideal demographic is 15-29year old women primarily, although in principle the age range is rather large but as a whole it is an age range I have proof of them liking and enjoying my genre of film.

This is a profile of someone who I would generally expect to watch my film/film trailer. They fit the demographic that I am trying to reach with my film trailer.

Name: Tasha O'Connor
Age: 18 years old
Education/job: University - English and History combined honours
Hobbies: Yoga, Running
Favourite genre: Romance or Comedy
Favourite film: Romeo and Juliet
Spare time: Chill with friends and family
Occupation: N/A

Name: Rachel Fowler
Age: 27
Education: A-Level
Hobbies: Tennis
Favourite genre: romance or thriller
Favourite film: About time
Spare time: chilling with the hubby watching movies
Occupation: Insurance

Why do I want these two people as my ideal target audience?

Tasha: Tasha is a well-educated teenager who has a wide variety of interested and to me that makes her someone I think would find my film interesting. Her favourite film being Romeo and Juliet also massively swayed my choice, as we all know the film is about forbidden love and I like to think that my film will have an element of this too.

Rachel: Although she is much older than Tasha and has a completely different set of interests/occupation when it comes to films, their interests are fairly similar. Her favourite film being About time made me really think that she would enjoy my film as it has an underlying theme of wanting what we cant have the first time.

Like i've said Tasha and Rachel have very different lives yet they can come together and both enjoy the same sort of film. I deliberately chose two people with an age gap but no lower as I think to watch my film there will be a needed level of maturity that someone bellow this age may not have yet.

Audiance Research Questionnaire

I wanted to do a questionnaire on what kind of genres people are interested into to ensure that my genre was one that people liked but I also wanted to find out specific things about trailers so I added in some questions about certain aspects of trailers too.

Basic conventions of a film trailer

A quick prezi which goes into more detail about certain codes and conventions of film trailers.

Social realism genre research

Social realism...

The realistic depiction in art of contemporary life, as a means of social or political comment.

From writing out my initial ideas and having my top choices in my head I decided to do a little bit of research into this genre as one of my ideas could fit into this genre too and I think I could film it the same sort of way as social realisms are filmed...so...I have looked into a few trailers for social realisms to see if its something that I can see working for my trailer.

- Fish Tank:

Fish tank:

Is about a 15year old girl who lives on a council estate in Essex, living with her un-caring mum and it follows her struggle and drive to wanting to become a hip-hop dancer but also the relationship that forms with her mothers Irish boyfriend.

Once I had watched the trailer I wanted to look more in to the storyline and the work behind the film and this article in particular seemed to have the highest level of detail into the questions I was asking.

My favourite line from the whole article was :

Ms. Arnold shot “Fish Tank” in a raw, non-judgmental and observational style with plenty of hand-held camerawork. This is how I think I would like to shoot this idea, maybe less raw considering the topics of Fish tank and my film will be on opposite ends of the scale.  I like the effect of the hand held camera and the fast pace editing of the shots it really does make the film look as if it's a documentary on her life rather than a set up film. If I go ahead with this idea I will most likely want to replicate the same effect so will if not always, mostly use a hand-held camera and fast pace editing depends on the situation in hand. I also think that the lighting in the trailer is crucial, well the lack of it. The low lighting helps reflect her situation and the storyline.

Ecstasy:

Is about a group of teenagers who start to recreationally take ecstasy but they begin to depend on the drug and become regular users. It follows their lives and how the drug takes its toll on them personally but also those who surround them.

For the first minuet of the trailer it looks as if they are glorifying it but then it takes a turn for the worst and it shows some of the negative impacts of the after effect or if you take too much. Again  Fish Tank it uses a what looks like a hand held camera for most of it and the editing is fast pace, yet this could be to mimic the effects of the drug and the lifestyle. I really liked the titles of this film, although they were fairly basic I like how they started off white, connotations of purity and changed to red which connotes danger and corruption, which is effectively what has happened to the girls that took the drug. 'try it you might like it, coming to wherever you are. soon' is a powerful way to end the trailer as its almost testing your morals and willpower and you assume they're talking about the drug when reality they mean the release of the film. When I make my trailer I think I would like to try and twist some words to entice the viewers even more.

From looking at two examples of social realism films I think I would really like to incorporate  into m film trailer some how, most likely through the use of a hand held camera and I will look at lighting in detail too as I really liked its effect on Fish tank.

Initial ideas.

The great thing about choosing romance as my genre is that time period or reality isn't an issue, romance is such a broad genre and can be mixed with some many other genres to form a subgenre as love is something that features in everyone's lives whether its with a person or not there will be something in their life that they love.

Before thinking about a storyline I thought it would be best to think about all of the different possible basic ideas, so the type of love in my eyes begin the most important. Once I have chosen my type of love I will be able to start to build upon my storyline and be able to pick what age I want my characters to be but also what time period are they living in, these two things will be a lot easier to choose as my options are somewhat more limited than a real life director/producer as my resources are much more limited.

Type of love

In my mind map I have listed all of the different types of love I could do but even within them I could sub-categorise them. heterosexual, platonic and homosexual love are to do with the person whereas first love childhood and forbidden love are more situational loves. So I could even make a trailer on a forbidden heterosexual love or a childhood homosexual love. Even though platonic love is a type of love it isn't a love I think you could base a romance film on as when you look at the definition of romance: try to gain the love of; court. It implies to be in a relationship with the other person and you cannot be romantically involved with that kind of love.

Ideas

Idea 1) I think it would be really good fun and unique to do a forbidden childhood homosexual love where I could follow one character through their life and reflect the emotions of them towards their desired partner but also the pain of not being able to have them. I think that this would be one of the hardest out of my initial ideas as it would require a fair few actors so may be hard to juggle, but it wouldn't have the problem of another time period so would get rid of that problem.

Idea 2) Another idea that I have in my head is almost a typical chick-flick storyline so a teenage boy teenage girl meet in a popular setting maybe school or college or even somewhere like a cafĂ© or they meet through friends. I think this idea would be easy to make seeing as I have access to those sort of settings but also that age range as well as it being set in the present time I wouldn't be struggling with location or sets.

Idea 3) Historical forbidden love, personally I have always enjoyed films that are set in the past and I think it would be awesome to give it a go. My idea would be a rich girl falls in love with a poor man but due to the difference in their social class' they cannot be together. I have the location available to me to film this but whether I have the costume and props available to me would be something I would have to look into before considering taking this idea any further.

Idea 4) First love, this idea has always been an interest of mine as im fascinated by the idea that depending on how our first love goes it taints how we view relationships and love.  I'd like to make a trailer on first loves in general like almost a fake documentary following a group of people or just one or two people ranging in ages and their day to day lives and how their first love affected them. This is one of my favourite ideas out of them all I think it would be fascinating to write but also fairly simple to film.

Food for thought

Before I started to plan my trailer I thought it might be a good idea to think about what I need to get the most out of my trailer. When I'm making my trailer so I watched a few trailers and decided that these are the main things that I need to think about when making my trailer.

tralier analysis of P.S I Love You on the credits and titles.

This PowerPoint looks into the titles and credits in the trailer P.S I Love you, I chose to look at this trailer as for one its one of my favourite romance films but also I could remember watching the trailer and really wanting to go see it so by looking into it and the different aspects of it I thought it would give me insight into how I could make my own.
